Realistic Weight Loss Timelines on Wegovy and Mounjaro

Realistic Weight Loss Timelines on Wegovy and Mounjaro

If you use Wegovy or Mounjaro, or you’re thinking about it, you might be wondering when you’ll see the results.

Because these medications are designed for long-term use, you’re more likely to see steady, gradual changes rather than anything sudden. This can be frustrating if you’re hoping for more dramatic weight loss, but understanding the typical Wegovy and Mounjaro timelines can help you stay motivated and make it more likely that you’ll see the results you’re after.

Many patients ask what to expect both early on and further along the process. So, it helps to understand how weight loss may unfold over time.

How Wegovy and Mounjaro work

Wegovy (containing the active ingredient semaglutide) and Mounjaro (containing tirzepatide) are both GLP-1 medications, or GLP-1 receptor agonists, meaning they mimic GLP-1, a hormone that’s produced by the gut. It reduces appetite and slows digestion, helping people feel fuller for longer.

Mounjaro also mimics the hormone GIP, making it a dual agonist. GIP changes how some fat is stored in the body, and it’s also thought that it may help boost metabolism

As a result, people taking Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to eat less food, consuming fewer calories, and this leads to weight loss. However, weight loss is likely to be steady and gradual, with noticeable results possible over the course of a few months or longer.

How dosage and progress change over time

The first few weeks

When you start on Wegovy or Mounjaro, you’ll take the lowest dose. The starting dose for Wegovy is 0.25mg a week, while for Mounjaro it’s 2.5mg a week. You’ll take this dose once a week for four weeks to help your body adjust to the medication gradually. You might notice changes in appetite at this stage, but you may not see any weight loss when you look in the mirror.

Moving up the dosage phases

Every four weeks, you’ll increase your dose. Some people are happy to stay at a lower dose if they’re content with their weight loss or they’re worried about potential heightened side effects at a higher dose, but most people continue to work their way up.

Following the Wegovy dosage chart, you’ll increase to 0.5mg, 1.0mg, 1.7mg, and 2.4mg every four weeks. Previously, 2.4mg was the highest maintenance dose, but some providers are now offering 7.2mg.

If you’re increasing your Mounjaro dose, you’ll go to 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and then 15mg every four weeks.

At this stage, you’re more likely to notice real monthly progress, with changes in your appetite and hunger levels, as well as less ‘food noise’ – those persistent, intrusive thoughts about food that can be tricky to ignore.

Staying in the maintenance phase

For many people, this will be the highest dose, but some people may be happy with a lower dose. At this point, you’re properly a few months into treatment, and there won’t be any more changes in dose – unless you’re at the highest and want to move down, or you’re at a lower dose and think you’d benefit more from moving up.

Here, you’re likely to see more steady and predictable monthly progress, particularly when you’re combining your Wegovy or Mounjaro use with a healthy lifestyle in other ways, such as sticking to a balanced diet and exercising regularly.

Gradual weight loss is best

We’d all love to take a magic pill that would see us wake up one day at our dream weight, but the gradual weight loss people see on GLP-1 medications is actually better for you than sudden or drastic weight loss.

Slower weight loss as you move up the dosage phases is more sustainable; your body is allowed to adjust to the changes, and it means that you’re likely to retain more muscle, too. It also gives you the chance to build healthy habits that can last a lifetime, and reduce the risk of rebound – putting the weight back on – or yo-yo dieting.

A study published in May 2025, involving people taking the maximum dose of Wegovy or Mounjaro they could tolerate for about a year and a half, shows the impact these medications can have. Those on Mounjaro lost an average of 20.2% of their body weight, while those on Wegovy lost 13.7% of theirs.

What to keep in mind

If you don’t lose weight straight away, or it takes you a few weeks or even a couple of months to notice changes in your body, don’t lose heart. It doesn’t mean that your medication isn’t working, but you can always talk over your worries with your prescriber or a clinician.

Likewise, a higher dose doesn’t necessarily mean faster results, so patience is key – even if you’d love to move to the highest dose quickly.

And, don’t forget that your medication, whether Wegovy or Mounjaro, doesn’t work on its own. For best results, a healthy lifestyle can go a long way. You don’t need to go overboard; just a few sensible changes like tracking what you eat or exercising regularly make a real difference.

Every weight loss journey is unique, but understanding the typical Wegovy or Mounjaro timeline can go a long way to making your own treatment more effective – and help you keep any worries or anxieties at bay. If you’d like to understand what your own timeline could look like, speaking to a clinician like those at The Virtual Slimming Clinic might help you feel more at ease.

Frequently asked questions

When will I start to see results on my GLP-1 medication?

You may notice changes in your appetite in the first few weeks, but most people only begin to see noticeable weight loss after two or three months, with steady progress continuing.

Will increasing my dose make me lose weight faster?

Not all the time – increasing your dose improves your tolerance and its effectiveness, not to speed up weight loss in itself.

When is a weight loss plateau likely on Wegovy or Mounjaro?

Plateaus are common on GLP-1 medications, and they often occur a few months into treatment, after the initial phase of weight loss. They happen as your body adapts to the recent changes it’s been experiencing.
