How to dress a living room window with curtains

Window Voile Curtains

When it comes to the living spaces in your home, the way that you dress the windows has a massive impact on the feel of the space. The way you choose to do it will have a significant impact on how much natural light can (or can’t) enter in, and will also change the thermal efficiency.

While it can be hard to say which way is the best way to do things in any situation, there are some general pointers that can help you on your journey – we spoke to Woodyatt Curtains to outline exactly what you need to know.

Nets and Voiles

If you want your living room to be a bright and airy space, especially in the summer, then consider hanging some net curtains. They let the majority of the natural light in, while stopping you from being blinded by direct sunlight.

They also add a little more privacy, especially if your living room faces a popular road, as many ground floor living rooms do in the UK. People won’t be able to glance into your room, but you’ll still get the full benefit of sunlight.

Match your curtains with your walls

If you like the paint scheme in your living room, then why not continue with that theme in your curtains? No matter what kind of curtain you get (unless they’re nets), you can try to match them with your walls, allowing them to appear like an extension of the walls both when they’re open and when they’re drawn shut.

This can create a very slick look; as walls are generally painted a bright colour, it also helps contribute to quite an open feel, helping the living space feel even more expansive. This can be especially beneficial if you live in a smaller space.

lined curtains for windows

Lined curtains

Your living room should be a warm, cosy spot during those winter months, and as cool as possible during the heat of summer. A great way of helping in this regard is by choosing curtains that are lined with some sort of insulation.

This will help to keep the cold out during winter, while also keeping the heat out when the sun blazes down in the middle of summer. You can have most curtain options lined, unless they’re particularly thin and translucent, where it would likely be inappropriate for the aesthetic you’re trying to achieve.

Window Pelmets

If you’re trying to go for a more formal look in your living room, to impress your guests and entertain with a touch more class, then it might be a good idea to install pelmets. While these coverings of the curtain fixings promote quite a traditional look, there are all sorts of options that will fit perfectly with a more modern aesthetic.

These are just a few pointers on how to dress your living room windows; there are countless options, and you likely won’t know exactly what you want until you’ve browsed through a whole host of unsuitable options. Eventually, you’ll come across something that’s just right – when that happens, you’ll just know.
