While spring may be the time most of us think about making changes to our home, there are lots of things that can be done this autumn. Due to the current situation we find ourselves in with COVID-19, the majority of us spent more time in our homes this summer than we may have done previously. This could well have sparked some ideas for changes you can make to your home this autumn. Below are some design and home improvement ideas for you to think about this autumn.
As a season, autumn can be somewhat divisive. Some people love the move into autumn from summer as the colours outside start to change, and winter and Christmas are just around the corner. For others, the darker nights and the drop in the temperature are hard to deal with after warm and bright summer days.
If you’re one of those people who love autumn, then decorating your home to reflect the season can be a great way to show it. Perhaps more than any other season, autumn is heavily associated with a specific colour palette. The different shades of orange and brown reflect the changing colours of the leaves outside and bringing these colours into your home can work really well!
There are lots of ways you can do this. A straightforward way is to add cushions to your living room and bedroom which use traditional autumnal colours. You can even just buy new cushion covers to put over your existing ones, which can save money and storage space. Another decoration idea is to create an autumn wreath which you can display around your home. You can use dried leaves, pinecones and even fruits such as orange slices, to create a stunning wreath for your home. If you’re unsure about a wreath, just dotting these traditional autumn items around your home, perhaps in small bowls, can really create a stunning autumn theme.
Freshen up your bathroom
If you have been able to save over the summer with not going on holiday and staying home more of the time, you may have some money available to make some more significant home improvements. Depending on your needs, some rooms will take priority but freshening up your bathroom is always a good idea. Smaller changed you can make include adding a new bathroom minor or painting your cabinets a new colour. You can also introduce accessories to your bathroom, and they can be seasonal as with others around your home. However, if you’re looking to make more significant changes, why not think about installing a new bathroom floor.
The flooring in your bathroom is really important for both the design and functionality of the room. Luxury vinyl flooring is a fantastic option for your bathroom as it is highly durable and looks fantastic. You can install vinyl in a variety of styles depending on your taste, and for bathrooms, a light stone effect works brilliantly as it complements the light colour of most baths and sinks.
Another more significant change you can make would be installing a new bath or shower and sink. These are the most prominent elements of a bathroom and can make a big difference in the overall look of the room.
Prepare your garden for spring and summer
Many of us are already looking towards 2021 with the hope that life will return to a more normal level and so looking ahead with your home can also be useful. Having an outside space that you could enjoy during the summer this year was really important, therefore there is nothing wrong with looking at what you can do to improve your garden during the winter, so it looks its best come next year.
If you’re interested in plants and flowers now is a good time to start planning where you’re going to plant new ones. If you need to create space, you can build flower boxes or even dig up some space to plant them in the ground. Some of us are more interested in having a nice lawn, and there are steps you can take over the winter to keep it in good condition. Regularly rake it to remove moss and leaves. A large amount of moss may indicate drainage issues, and with the amount of rain which falls during winter months this is important to deal with. Using a lawn spike to help drainage is a good idea.
There are lots of things you can do to improve your home and its design this autumn and winter, so if you have any others, please feel free to share them in the comments!
