  • Why Are UK Employers Adding Breathalyser Tests to Workplace Safety Plans: Improving Employee Well-being and Productivity

3 In recent years, many UK employers have taken the step of adding breathalyser tests to their workplace safety plans. These tests are becoming more common because they help maintain a safer and more productive environment. By identifying alcohol use in the workplace, employers can address potential safety threats and minimise the risk of accidents, which is a significant concern in environments where machinery or hazardous tasks are involved. Including breathalyser tests can also help employers meet legal and regulatory responsibilities. Keeping the workplace safe isn't just about improving productivity; it's about compliance and safeguarding employee wellbeing. Employers recognise the dual benefits of preventing accidents and promoting a culture of safety awareness that these tests bring. Beyond safety, introducing breathalyser tests can have a positive impact on overall workplace culture. When employees know that safety measures are in place, it can promote a sense of trust and professionalism. This measure reflects a commitment to protecting both the workforce and the business's reputation. Rationale Behind Breathalyser Tests in the Workplace Incorporating breathalyser tests at work offers numerous advantages. These tests aim to improve employee safety, follow health regulations, and boost productivity and professionalism at work. Improving Employee Safety A breathalyser test for alcohol helps safeguard the workplace environment by detecting alcohol consumption among employees. Detecting alcohol early reduces the risk of accidents, especially in sectors where safety is important. Workers handling heavy machinery or performing tasks requiring focus and coordination benefit most from these tests. Implementing alcohol testing at work is important in guaranteeing safety in sensitive roles. Safety protocols often improve when monitoring tools like breathalysers are in place. They discourage staff from working under the influence, potentially preventing harm to themselves and others. Workplace safety is a shared responsibility, and breathalysers can play a significant role in maintaining a safe environment for everyone. Compliance With Health and Safety Legislation Using breathalyser tests also helps businesses adhere to existing health and safety laws. Regulations may require workplaces to maintain environments free from alcohol to protect employees and customers. Implementing alcohol testing strategies can show a company's commitment to legal standards, potentially reducing liability risks. While the law states that no employee can be forced to provide a sample for testing, employers can create clear policies about alcohol consumption and testing expectations. Establishing a transparent testing policy supports business operations and aligns with legal obligations, reinforcing responsibility. Productivity and Professionalism Monitoring alcohol intake can directly impact workplace productivity. Employees under the influence are more likely to have impaired judgement and reduced efficiency, which can lead to mistakes and declines in output. Firms that introduce breathalyser tests can see improved focus and work quality. Additionally, alcohol testing can shape a culture of professionalism among staff. It encourages responsibility and accountability, important traits in a productive workforce. By disincentivising alcohol consumption during working hours, you enable a professional environment centred on respect and high standards. Implementation Strategies for Employers Introducing breathalyser tests in the workplace can improve safety and efficiency. The strategy involves setting up clear policies, providing training, and maintaining privacy. Developing Clear Policies Creating precise guidelines for breathalyser tests is important. You should specify when and where tests will be conducted, who will administer them, and the consequences for positive results. It's important to make rules that apply equally to all employees. This helps to maintain fairness and build trust. Regularly updating these policies can adapt to any legal changes. Regulations may require certain industries to follow special rules. For example, businesses involving heavy machinery may need stricter measures. By staying informed, you keep your workplace current and compliant. Training and Education Programmes Training staff is key in implementing breathalyser tests. Education sessions should cover the importance of testing, how it works, and the impact on safety. It's useful to include practical demonstrations to make the process simple to understand. In-house training allows employees to ask questions and voice their concerns. It is important to address any misconceptions or fears. You could also provide educational materials, like leaflets or online resources. These can support the information from training sessions. Guaranteeing Accuracy and Privacy Accuracy in breathalyser tests is important for fairness. Make sure to use certified devices. Regular calibration and maintenance are needed to provide reliable results. You should train staff on proper operation and handling to minimise errors. Data privacy is also significant when carrying out workplace tests. Restrict access to test results to those who must know. Follow privacy laws to protect employee information. Communicate to employees how their data will be stored, used, and kept secure. Transparency builds confidence and compliance among the workforce. Conclusion Breathalyser tests are becoming an important part of workplace safety plans in the UK. They help reduce accidents and promote a safer work environment. These tests also deter substance use at work, contributing to better productivity. Employees might feel that their privacy is affected, but it is important to balance this with the need for safety. Employers should clearly communicate their policies and the benefits of testing. Adding breathalyser tests can lead to fewer accidents and a more focused workforce. In the long run, this creates a safer and more productive workplace.

[AD] This year has been full of changes, we’ve homeschooled, we’ve worked from home (and still do) and as a result, we have spent more time in the house than we have out. It’s been no surprise that our monthly utility bills have increased over that period.
With our rising bills we wanted to see how easy it would be to reduce our bills and be more in control of our energy usage by switching to a smart home with one of the UKs leading smart home providers @HiveHomeUK. Combined with our Amazon Echo devices we have fully automated the lights in our home with Hive Dimmable Lights. They can be dimmed, set on timer, switched on/off via the app and respond to voice commands through Alexa.
You can find out more ways a smart home with Hive can benefit you in my blog post (link in bio)

Over the past few months I’ve found myself trying new things when my regular items weren’t available. In the process there have been a few products that have become firm favourites.
⁣
1. Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food: during lockdown I did my hair dirty and bleached it. Im learning to deal with the hot mess that I have created and have been using these to help revive my dry & damaged hair.
⁣
2. Nip + Fab Salicylic Fix Pads Day & Night: These are an old favourite of mine that I have recently rediscovered. They are honestly my favourite skincare product for dealing with hormonal breakouts. I always find myself drifting back to use them over other products.
⁣
3. Lacura Healthy Glow Glycolic Toner: This little gem was a impulse purchase that has soon made its way into my daily skincare regime.
⁣
4. Layering Lab Body Mist: These are perfect for keeping in my gym bag and smell amazing. I have them in all the scents and they smell amazing. (Some have very similar scents to well known perfumes, Sorbet is very much like Viktor & Rolf Bon Bon)
⁣
5. Animal Crossing: I won’t lie, during lockdown, I got sucked into the world of Animal Crossing and I have been hooked ever since.
⁣
6. Solait Tanning Water Mousse: with no holidays this year, I’ve resorted to a tan from a bottle over the summer months. This has secured its place as my favourite tanning product because it not only applies well, looks great & smells nice but it doesn’t break the bank either!
⁣
Have you discovered any favourite products over summer? I’m looking forward to the colder months and seeing what new products make their way into my routine.

☀️☀️We made it one whole week of school before the whole drama of COVID testing began. It’s certainly been quite the experience. We are now glad to be enjoying a calm afternoon in the sunshine before it’s back to chaos of the school run tomorrow. ☀️☀️

Autumn is no doubt my favourite time of year and I’m ready for those crisp autumn days and cosy evenings BUT I’ll admit I’m enjoying this sudden burst of warm weather again. It’s been a funny old summer all round so I’m making the most of the last few days of sunshine.
We’ve had Little Legs at home this week, and are waiting on a negative COVID test before she can return to school, I guess this is our new normal now and I’m not sure that I like it.

Back to School with @justhypeofficial 📚🍎
This year has been full of changes. One of them being that Little Legs seems to have gone from a little girl to tween over night. She’s now fashion conscious and tells me that she’s “too old to be wearing that”. This year @justhypeofficial have ticked all the boxes with their range, we didn’t have any arguments when picking out back to school items and little legs is absolutely thrilled with her choices.

Little legs picked out

Little Legs suffers from anxiety, some days she manages to keep it under control but with all that is going on in the world, COVID and returning to school, her anxiety has ramped up tenfold.

@lifestrongkids asked if we like to review one of their subscription boxes aimed at children’s mental health and well-being and we jumped at the chance. It couldn’t have come at a better time.

Over the last week, we have worked out way through the box and Little Legs has thoroughly enjoyed every activity from foraging for leaves & conkers to make a nature crown to discussing all the positives going on in the world right now. It’s been just what she needed to help settle her anxiety before returning to school this week.
