You are installing new shelves to be able to improve your storage and get rid of all the clutter. Or you are looking at a Skip Hire option so that you can get rid of all of your rubbish and clutter before the festive season truly kicks off next week. There are things that you can do to make sure that you declutter your house in time for Christmas, and we’ve got them for you below.

Don’t try to do it all at once

If you are going to be having guests over this Christmas, you still have some time to make sure that you can go from room to room to get everything sorted, rather than try to do everything all at the same time. If you are jumping from one room to the next, you’re not going to get very much done. The easiest way to have success with your decluttering is to go one room at a time. This allows you to move through any decluttering tasks methodically and not try to get overwhelmed with all of the things that are going to be surrounding you as you try to unpack everything just to repack it all into the right place. You need to break down this task into more manageable chunks to be able to stay on top of it.

Start small

The phrase may be to go big or go home, but when Christmas is looming you need to start small so you don’t overwhelm yourself too quickly. Start with the easiest spaces, such as the laundry or bathroom, so that you can declutter those areas first and feel accomplished. That should inspire you to move into the bigger rooms and finally ending up in the kitchen where most of the decluttering is going to happen before you have to bring in new food for your freezers, fridge and pantry. It feels a lot easier to move on to the bigger rooms of your home once you have tackled the smaller ones.

Final light onto the kitchen

The kitchen is often the focus point during the holidays because that’s where all the food preparations and the hanging out takes place. You don’t want to end up with countertops full of stuff when you could be decluttering everything and keep the kitchen a focal point. Get rid of any dusty appliances or put them away into storage for the month. Clean out your cupboards and your countertops and give a clean out to all of your drawers and cabinets. If there are odds and ends that you no longer need, clean those out too. Once you’ve done that, you’ll feel far more accomplished and ready to take over the space for Christmas.

Think about your entertainment area

With the family being around for Christmas, you need to have enough space for everybody to sit down. Making sure that you put any unused shelving units or cabinets into storage is going to help you to ensure that you are going to have a space for everybody. Clear the main entertaining areas such as the liver room and the backyard or even the sunroom. Take out any of the unwanted furniture and store it away either in the garage or in a dedicated storage space. And get rid of any decorative items or knick knacks you don’t use or don’t want to be broken. This will help to Invite new energy to space.

Declutter your decorations

If you’re going through your Christmas decor right now in the hopes of putting up your tree or any house decorations ready for Christmas, get rid of all the ones that you can’t use or are broken. Go through all of the Christmas lights to make sure that every single bulb is working correctly and make sure that you are keeping the stuff that looks good and getting rid of the broken things. You do not need to keep broken baubles or ripped pieces of tinsel, even if it does bring you that nostalgia from your childhood. You don’t want to decorate your house with sparse decorations, but you also don’t want to double up on decorations by just buying more before you check what you’ve got. This way you can keep all of your clutter to a minimum.

Start a donation pile

As you move methodically from room to room to declutter, make sure that you are putting together a pile of things that you can donate. When you’ve accumulated the belongings that you don’t need or want, then donate them to charity. December is all about giving, right? And if you can give back to a charity in any way, then you should do that. When it comes to your pantry, if there is food in there that is still on good terms but you no longer want it, put it to a food bank if you can. There’s always someone somewhere in need that would prefer the help rather than you getting rid of things.

Rent a space for those large furniture items

Renting a storage space is a good idea. Storing away the items temporarily will always mean that you can get them back out of storage after the Christmas season has ended. You can then also replace them with your Christmas decorations or the extra storage for seating that you’ve been using. This will help you to use the spaces properly and store everything correctly without risking it being damaged.

Don’t forget to put together the guest room

Clearing out the guest room and refreshing all of the sheets on the beds is going to be a great idea for this Christmas. You can remove any unwanted pieces of furniture or belongings that are taking up space and don’t need to be there. Clearing out all of the drawers and closets so the guests feel welcome is also a good idea. Just make sure you store it all properly in suitcases so you can put it back afterwards.

Get rid of junk draws

Eliminating your high clutter areas is a good plan. From all of the junk drawers to the spare room that’s built up with rubbish overtime, you don’t need any space in your home to be a dumping ground. There are always overflowing spaces in the house where the unused clutter can quickly accumulate, but if you get rid of that from happening, you won’t have to worry about it in the future.

Christmas is just around the corner and it’s a stressful enough season as it is. Decluttering now is going to give you enough time and space to just prepare all the fun Christmas things rather than having to clean nearer the time.
