The finish also needs to be able to withstand anything your family can throw at it. You do not want to choose something that will stain if you spill red wine on it.
Ideally, you want to choose something that you can put down and forget about, apart from cleaning it. You really do not want to have to wax or varnish your floors every year.
It is also worth thinking about what would happen if part of the floor starts to look worn. In a busy household, this can easily happen even when you buy good quality flooring materials.
