How to make your first house move less daunting

Moving house can be stressful for even the most seasoned of house moving veterans. If it’s your first time, however, then it will likely be even more overwhelming.

Knowing how to navigate the move can make it a lot less daunting, and there are some simple points to keep in mind in this area. From planning early on, to maintaining a semblance of social normality, here’s how you can make your first house move less daunting.

Make a plan & timeline

One of the best ways of making your first move less daunting, or any move for that matter, is to make a plan before you actually get started.

List everything that you need to do, from saying bye to neighbours to changing the address on your driver’s license. Once you have everything written in a single place, you can start to make a timeline.

The longer you leave to do everything, the less stressed you’ll be. Some things – your search for a new place, for example – can start months before you actually need to move. Others, like cancelling your Wi-Fi plan, need to be done at the last minute.

Declutter & pack properly

How effectively you declutter and pack will have an immense impact on the move. The more stuff you manage to get rid of, the less you will have to actually move, and the more space you’ll have in your new home.

Start packing a couple of weeks before the actual move, and be diligent with your labelling. Make sure that you don’t pack the things you use every day, like your laptop charger and toothbrush, until the last minute.

Get professional help

If you can afford it, then hiring a removals service like Bright Movers can have a big impact on how manageable the move is.

These services can be as involved as you want in the move, either providing a more complete service, including packing support and storage, or just moving your belongings from A to B in a suitable van or lorry.

You can likely struggle through smaller moves with some help from friends and a rental car, but even then, moving furniture like beds and mattresses can be a massive pain, and with help from a removals company, an avoidable one at that.

Stay social

During the build-up to the move, it’s easy to retreat from your normal life. The bits that seem non-essential – your social life, exercise – can take a bit of a back seat, but this can often result in the move being a lot more stressful than it needs to be.

Stay social, even if it’s just meeting a friend for 20 minutes to have a coffee as a packing break. It helps to maintain a kind of enjoyable texture to your life, and reminds you that the move isn’t going to go on forever.

By leaving enough time to get everything done, getting help, and implementing a clear plan early on in the process, you can make sure that you get everything taken care of with minimal stress. Just make sure that you talk to your friends and remain social, and you’ll have a good recipe for success.
