Athens is the go-to destination for many travellers because it’s so close to many of the most famed Ancient Greek sites that remain to this day. Acropolis might just be the most famous. The collection of monuments is regularly showcased as the epitome of artistic craftsmanship from the age of Greek Antiquity.

At a time when Athens was pulling ahead of the other city-states, spurred by democracy, art, and thought, Pericles and Pheidias came together to transform a hill into a monument of Athens’ ascent into a higher sense of being. Not far away, you’ll find another of the city’s ancient treasures, the Ancient Agora of Athens.

From the foot of the Acropolis, you can walk 15 minutes to get to this grand courtyard filled with ancient pillars. In the ancient days of Athens, the site played a key part in commerce and the exchange of all manner of ideas and teachings. It’s also here that you’ll find the Temple of Hephaestus, and not far away is the Panathenaic Stadium.

Mount Olympus is among the most famous locations of Greek myth, and it just so happens to be a real place. Towering into the clouds, it’s the fabled home of the Greek pantheon and the throne sat upon by Zeus after he beat the Titans. Both Zeus and Mount Olympus play prominently in the most iconic tales of the age.

Regardless of the adaptation or interpretation, Zeus sits in a grand palace atop this mountain. You can see it in films and even in bingo online. The Age of the Gods Bingo game advertises itself with an image of Zeus before the cloud-encased city of Olympus. From there, it draws on his powers and those of the other gods to juice up the bingo.

You can make your way up Mount Olympus to see the fabled seat of Zeus for yourself. Nearby, you’ll also find the Archaeological Park of Dion. This ancient city was built by Ancient Macedonians in Zeus’ name. It developed into a prosperous city complete with stadiums and theatres. Later, the Romans would come and build it out further.

Of course, there are many, many other great ancient places to explore across Greece, with the age of Greek Antiquity certainly not being short on marvels that have lasted to this day. For the beginnings of a plan, though, consider Mount Olympus and Athens to be your best ports of call.
